My Mixed Media painting is a resemblance of the dangerous effect of micro-plastics on our oceans and our environment. Micro-plastics are tiny particles of plastic that you can find mostly anywhere in today's world. The problem with these micro-plastics is how they’re potentially life threatening to both marine life as well to ourselves. I wanted my piece to bring awareness to how serious this issue is, and the huge impact it has on our environment.
As your gaze makes its way across the canvas, you see ocean life in different forms of struggle. You watch these creatures try to swim through pollution and beady micro-plastics/ fibres which suffocate their gills when they breathe or get into their mouths when they feed. Ocean life directly affects our lives, which is exemplified by a fisherman at the very top. He's casting a large net down into the ocean, catching bits of garbage and sea life. On shore there’s a fresh fish market, and far in the background you can see the stunning city with its tall skyscrapers.
. This piece is an illustration of the cycle of how micro plastics get into our bodies and into our oceans. We pollute the ocean with garbage from the city. The pollution then breaks down into micro-plastics, which are then absorbed by sea life. When the fisherman casts his net, he catches then sells his fish to the city. The city consumes toxic fish and the micro-plastics/ fibres go into their bodies. Then, when someone does not recycle their plastic water bottle properly, it makes its way into the ocean, and the cycle continues. If we want to stop this cycle, we have to realize what role we play in all this and change our ways!
