Oil on Canvas 1ft by 1ft *The Robson Band album cover @TheRobsonBand on instagram*

This first oil painting (a sneak peak into my work in progress paintings) “Punk scenes from Vancouver 2010-2024” is inspired by a place I want to make homage to. A venue I was familiar with in the year of 2018, this house was called The 666.

The painting unfolds with deep tones highlighting the graffiti on the wall with a bright orange while the central focus – a couch where 1 figure perches and 2 people sit can be seen slightly left to the canvas.

Remembering back the 666 was always frenzy of activity: Concerts almost every night. There was a freezer the size of a body in the basement backroom in this over 100 year old house. A bit too close for comfort, I always imagined it used to be used for hiding corpses. The basement was also where people played concerts and was always bustling with people and noise.

A hole punched in the wall to serve spaghetti to guests made dinner time a dash, and Phil Collins was unfortunately banned. The church found my phone and posted "Shawna's phone is in Gods hands" on my social media. We didn’t say goodbye on the Ouji board and now we may be haunted?

The 666 was a house lacking working heat but a home for local punk and rock concerts. This Vancouver Venue named after its address 666 as well as by its anarchist residents, nestled on Victoria Street and 49th was homage to art and culture. It was one of the most remember-able Punk homes that I can name in the Vancouver region to this day.
